BEST WEDDING FILM: MARU FILMS WITH BENNY AND PATRICK

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT MARU FILMS.
We are Remi and Pui-Yuk, two creative professionals who have a unique artistic eye for filming. We set ourselves apart because of the style, attention to detail but mostly our way of storytelling. We capture that what is most important: the love between two people and the emotions throughout the day. Not just the emotions of the wedding couple, but of everyone surrounding them on their special day. We love emotions. Pure emotions. Capturing them and making a product people can feel. This will be our sixth year of filming weddings. We film destination weddings but also local weddings.

WHY DID YOU ENTER THESE AWARDS?
We wanted to see how our films are compared to the best in this industry.

WHAT DOES THIS AWARD FOR BEST WEDDING FILM MEAN TO YOU?
An absolute honour and recognition for all the work we have put into this film, but most of all confirmation that we’re doing a good job.

DID YOU ALREADY KNEW THIS WOULD BECOME A SPECIAL FILM WHILST SHOOTING IT?
Yes, because of the couple. We really felt like we were close friends instead of just their videographer for the day. That’s when we do our best work, when there’s a very good connection with the couple.

WHAT PART OF THIS FILM IS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY?
The moment where they were on the snowy top of the mountain, and they were getting close and just enjoying the moment and each other. You can feel the love they have for each other just by looking at those images.

COULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EDITING PROCESS?
We’ll to be honest, it wasn’t easy. We spent a lot of time going through different versions and were having trouble finding the right music. We just wanted it to be perfect for the couple after many revisions we finally found the right balance for everything and felt it was as we envisioned it to be.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME DURING THE WHOLE PROCESS?
Finding the right music! It’s basically a struggle for every wedding film.

OKAY, THE QUESTION EVERYBODY ALWAYS ASKS….. LET’S GET THAT OUT OF THE WAY. WHAT WAS IN THE KIT-BAG DURING THIS WEDDING?

WAS THERE SOMETHING YOU LEARNED DURING MAKING THIS FILM?
The fact that we can make it very hard for ourselves, that we try to keep pushing ourselves with every film. But striving for this perfection all the time is a double edged sword.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS STRUCTURE OF STORYTELLING/EDITING?
Our goal for every wedding film is for people to be engaged with the couple and the video from beginning to end. So every decision we make is to serve that goal, the cuts, the plot, the music and the editing. Our philosophy is that a viewer should feel the edit and not necessarily see every detail or cut.

Like with all our films we look at the personal story of the couple. With Benny and Patrick theree there were times where things were though, but ultimately they fought through it and finally can spend their lives together. So, we wanted to reflect that into the film. As a red-line we used the clock which they gave each other for the wedding, as a symbol for their love, but at the same time it is to guide the viewer through the timeline of their love story. Going from present time to the past to the present time again and basically end with a hint of their future. By ending the story with Patrick putting the watch in his pocket and saying he would carry Benny’s heart with him always, we make the clock a symbol of their love. It all suits our philosophy to edit in a not too obvious way. Ultimately allowing the couple to discover small details every time they watch the film again.

WHY THIS MUSIC AND HOW DID YOU IMPLEMENT SOUND DESIGN?
As mentioned finding the right music was very difficult. Especially in the way we wanted to unfold the story it was not possible to do it with a single song, so we merged 3 songs for creating the right atmosphere for the beginning, middle and end of the story. It had to really fit the feeling that we wanted the audience to experience. From the emotional gentle part to the celebratory and resolution part of the story. But with music alone we were not there, using sound design we emphasise on our philosophy of feeling the film. In certain parts of the film we want highlight specific things, like the clock or small moments. But in a very subtle way, that as a viewer you only notice it in a subconscious way.

WHAT OR WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION, IN GENERAL?
Everything! From tv commercials, block buster movies, documentaries to music, vlogs, photography. We get inspired from a lot of different sources.

IS THERE SOMETHING MORE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT THIS FILM?
Together with the couple we really hoped we could inspire people with their love story. It’s unimaginable but in some cultures gay marriages are still not accepted. We have gotten some negative comments just about this specific topic, which shows it still a difficult topic in some cultures. So we believe by showing that love is love, no matter who or which background, we are able to make it more acceptable.
